Portal Frame Bridges - Structural Steel.

Portal frame bridges (Fig. 4.6) are mainly suitable for short or medium spans. In a three-span form with sloping legs they can provide an economic solution by offering a reduction in span and have an attractive appearance. The risk of shipping collision with sloping legs must be considered for bridges over navigable rivers. Portal bridges tend to be less economic than beam bridges because the foundations must be designed to resist horizontal thrust, complex details can be required at the joints and erection is more complicated.
